At the beginning of February a Póvoa carriage took on an unusual assignment as part of the production equipment for an exciting new film - "Lines of Wellington ".
Under the wing of eminent Portuguese producer Paulo Branco (a name and face familiar to riders of the Raid Hippico de Torres as well as film-goers) the feature-length film and its companion television series is well into its location shooting phase and the Póvoa carriage featured in several scenes.

Naturally the fort of San Vincente (in Torres Vedras) features in the action, as you can see above, and here are a few more (unofficial!) "previews" taken there.

The optical telegraph system pictured in the first two shots should be familiar to Monte Socorro summit visitors, especially during Raid events of recent years, but for more of the stories told by the film, you'll have to wait a while.

"The Lines of Torres Vedras form the backdrop for the adventures of a host of characters from all walks of life - soldiers and civilians, men, women and children, young and old - their daily routine shattered by a war pursued over hills and valleys, through villages in ruin, with crops devastated and forests burned. Harried by the French, plagued by inclement weather, a mass of fugitives treks on gritting their teeth, just to save their skin, with a tenacious desire to resist the invaders and drive them from the country, or perhaps in the hope of taking advantage of the prevailing disorder to meet their lowest instincts. All these, whatever their character and their motivations - the idealistic young lieutenant Pedro de Alencar, the malicious English girl Clarissa Warren, the shady dealer Penabranca, the vindictive Sergeant Francis Xavier and the lush debauchée Martírio - come together by different paths at the lines of Torres, where the final battle will decide the fate of each one."
