A new book (as yet only in Portuguese) detailing the current state of the "Heritage of The Lines"

The Lines of Torres Vedras - the line of defence of Lisbon and last defensive stronghold of Portugal during the Third French Invasion - constitute the largest fortification of all the Napoleonic Wars. More than two hundred redoubts of this defensive system, built and consolidated between 1809 and 1814, fortified a hundred and twenty kilometers of fronts, both north (lines of Torres Vedras, Lisbon and Oeiras / Carcavelos) and south of the Tagus river (lines Almada and Setúbal). Two hundred years later, there remains a unique heritage, tangible and intangible, that the State recognizes and which local municipalities value. Promoted and established by General Wellington, commander of the Anglo-Portuguese army, with the financial and logistical support of the governments of Britain and Portugal, this historical development owed much in its implementation to a host of competent and hardworking military engineers, British and Portuguese, but also owed much to a real general mobilization of local people and their remarkable spirit of sacrifice. "A Defesa de Lisboa: Linhas de Torres Vedras, Lisboa, Oeiras e Sul do Tejo (1809-1814)" is the result of an investigation that the author led for eight years in a comprehensive and critical way, documenting the most relevant aspects for the recognition and interpretation of lines in the light of renewed interest.

The book may be obtained from a number of bookstores inlcuding:
