The important fort overlooking Sobral de Monte Agraço (Redoubt 14, in District 2 of the Lines) has in recent years suffered from a large accumulation of extremely dense vegetation, resulting in difficult access and presenting a risk of erosion and damage to the fort's remaining structures.
![]() ![]() Over the summer, Florest sponsored and managed removal of the vegetation by sensitive manual and mechanical methods, promoting and protecting this important site. The gallery below (click on the thumbnails) shows sections of the site before and after treatment. Access for visitors has greatly improved and the original stone facings (revetments) of the fort are now clearly visible. At the "Time of the Lines" the fort mounted fourteen 12-pounder guns, six 9-pounders, four 6-pounders and one 5.5-inch howitzer (mostly supplied from Lisbon) and held a garrison of 1590 men. It was also one of the chain of first line signal stations.1 There's more about the work of Florest on their web site (opens a new window) |
