The fort above Enxara dos Cavaleiros (Redoubt No 29 in District 3) being entirely earthwork posed different problems to those at Alqueidão , requiring detailed identification and cataloguing of the plant species on the site before clearance.

Plan of redoubt 28 A plan of Redoubt 29 showing four cannon embrasures and the powder magazine.

Before beginning work, Florest established four observation categories based on shrub or herbaceous heights:- 0-20cm high, 20-60cm, 60cm-1m, and more than 1m high.

The most representative species of the different categories were identified, the total density of soil cover of native shrubs and herbaceous plants was determined in each plot and the partial density for each class of observation was also determined.

Forty-two plant species  were identified.

The gallery below (click on the thumbnails) shows the much improved outlines of the earthworks including the western ditch and parapet (Monte Socorro in the background), the northeast rampart, and the powder magazine entrance. The remaining photos show views to north, south, east and west before work began.

At the "Time of the Lines" the fort mounted four 9-pounder guns and was supported by a garrison of 280 men.1
