During the weekend of Saturday 20th - Tuesday 23rd June 2009 a party from the UK Royal Artillery Historical Society visited Lisbon for a "Battlefield Tour" under the guidance of BHSP.

Quinta da Póvoa, (for "General Sir Brent Spencer's Quarters"), and Quinta do Vale do Corvo (for lunch!) figured large in this visit. The Royal Artillery, not always Wellington's best favourites in the Penninsular, were in their early days as a fully recognised part of the British army (the Royal Horse Artillery was formed in 1793 as a mobile reserve to the cavalry and in 1801 the RA had a total of 100 companies in 10 battalions). The redoubts of the Lines, manned mostly by Portuguese including volunteers and militia with the help of the RA (and the Royal Navy), neverthelesss played the crucial role in the defence of Lisbon in 1810.   This tour gave their modern successors some idea of the part the Quintas played - particularly in the communication system - and how the senior officers lived, in this case in very pleasant accommodation!

Here is the group after the tour, outside Póvoa's "Junot Gates".
