Local farmers in the area surrounding Monte Socorro learned the arts of fox hunting for the first time from the British officers stationed there at the time of the Lines and the sport remained popular (when circumstance allowed) ever afterwards.

Hunting, 1905

An interesting picture of a hunt (shown above) has recently come to light.
Drawn by Cruz Martins and dedicated to an uncle ( Eduardo Montufar Barreiros) of the present owner of Quinta da Póvoa the sketch illustrates a hunt (for hares) in the Serra do Socorro - Enxara region in 1905. The characteristic outlines of the hills in the background suggest a location near Quinta da Póvoa and the hectic activity might suggest some success! (perhaps the typical rocky terrain doesn't give the advantage to the hare that flat open county would - agility rather than speed is important here!).

Notice also that the fashionable riding costume for this occasion is now the traditional Portuguese style.
