A thematic walk in the Lines of Torres Vedras, with Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, Norway and Belgium.

On Saturday 22nd May, 2010, the British Embassy promoted a themed walk to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lines of Torres Vedras.

to the summit of Monte Socorro

An initiative of the British Ambassador, Alex Ellis, the event was joined by the Norwegian Ambassador, Inga Magistad - Norway co-ordinates a program of support for the restoration of the Lines - and the ambassador of Belgium, Jean-Michel Veranneman de Watervliet, linking the commemorations of "Waterloo 200" which Belgium has initiated with the battle of Roliça.lupinus augustifoliusAbout 120 participants were led by the redoubtable guide Clive Gilbert, for a 3-hour perambulation through the central zone of the Lines, covering the most dramatic and beautiful historical and agricultural landscape, including visits to the Interpretative Centre of Serra do Socorro and the headquarters of Sir Brent Spencer, located in Quintas da Póvoa and Vale do Corvo, where they had enjoyed of a lunch of traditional products characteristic of the agriculture of the area of the Lines. Featured among these were the wines of Adega Cooperativa de Dois Portos, a location famous for the combat of 13th October 1810, artisan cheeses, local breads and fruit such as Rocha pears and strawberries. Also not lacking were the popular lupins (lupin beans) that despite the passing of two hundred years still continue to awake in the British the same curiosity as at the period of defence of the Lines, when the Portuguese soldiers would have recourse to them to allay their hunger, to the astonishment of their allies.

This successful initiative targetted  basically for increased international awareness of the Lines, continues, aided by the support of the British Historical Society, "Itinerante " magazine and "Cavalo Revista ", publications dedicated to walking and equestrian pursuits of wider interest for historical tourism.
